Clarkson created an amphibious Nissan pickup (the Nissank). After being absent from the previous episode, this episode marks the start of the opening "Tonight!" sequence beginning to lose its credibility as a quick guide to the episode's content, with a blatantly false segment advertised (the Ferrari on the "Moon"). They also attempted (and failed) to break the record set by Richard Branson for crossing the Channel in an amphibious vehicle. The presenters had aimed for Calais, but missed, finishing in Sangatte. Clarkson won, while carrying his co-presenters, in his "Nissank" on the trip. Hammond's Transporter worked well initially, but the engine was damaged in rough seas, necessitating the use of an outboard engine. May was unable to sail the Herald out of the harbour, sinking twice and damaging the vehicle beyond repair. May upgraded and used the same Triumph Herald he had used originally. Hammond used another Volkswagen T3 Transporter.
